Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS) is seeking volunteers for its Foster Grandparent service, in partnership with AmeriCorps Seniors, a national service agency, to offer guidance and encouragement to children and youth in the community. Foster Grandparent volunteers are older adults who traditionally offer one-to-one mentoring in the classroom and other settings to children and youth who may be experiencing academic or social challenges. Their presence and reassurance can help children and youth improve self-esteem, social and emotional development and literacy and math skills.

Camp Knutson’s beautiful 30-acre campus is nestled between the pristine waters of Lower Whitefish and Big Trout lakes. The very tip of the point where the channel connects the two lakes has a significant amount of erosion due to storms, ice, boat traffic, and wave action.

Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota is seeking AmeriCorps caregiver volunteers to meet at the homes of older adults and out in the community, offering caregivers a few hours each week to run errands, catch up with friends and recharge. Volunteers earn a monthly living allowance ranging from $150 to $250 and can earn a $1,300 to $1,600 education grant annually, which they can use for tuition and student loans.

Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS) is launching the LSS Imhotep Freedom School© in North Minneapolis this summer through a partnership with Children's Defense Fund (CDF). Scholars, as children are known in the Freedom School movement, will have the opportunity to participate in free summer programming that builds leadership, social engagement and academic skills through high-quality STEAM education and summer reading activities.

“Purchasing a home is a big commitment, and the preparation can seem daunting at first,” said Sandi Kleist, director of Homeownership Services for LSS Financial Counseling. “But with commitment and hard work, individuals can achieve their dream of home ownership by building a solid plan and sticking to it.”

LSS Youth & Family Services has plans for a new facility in Duluth that will serve children more effectively and expand family services, including parent education and coaching, behavioral health, reunification support and other vital community services.

The Bethany Crisis Shelter in Morgan Park will soon have a new home to better serve children and their parents during times of need. The project will replace the current Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota facility for short-term, emergency housing for youth undergoing times of crisis and trauma.
