KARE TV reported that a new federal rule by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will ban medical bills on credit reports, prevent lenders from considering applicants' medical information in loan applications, and help millions of Americans improve credit scores by 20 points, which could make a big difference, said Kim Miller with LSS Financial Counseling.

"That can make a difference for a lot of people who are on the border between fair and good credit, and good and excellent credit," Miller said in a KARE TV news report.

The new federal policy follows a Minnesota law enacted October 1 that prohibits medical providers from reporting unpaid medical bills to credit bureaus. Miller recommends that individuals regularly check their credit report to ensure that information is correct by using this federally-regulated website.
