Camp Noah awarded Rebuild Texas grant to help kids and families recover from Hurricane Harvey
June 20, 2018 – A new grant of $122,750 from The Rebuild Texas Fund will allow Camp Noah to serve elementary-age children in Texas communities affected by Hurricane Harvey this summer. Camp Noah is a nationally-acclaimed preparedness and resiliency program for children impacted by disaster. Usually held over five days, camps are designed to provide hope and healing in a safe and fun environment.
Camp Noah will hold camps in the Texas counties of Hardin, Fayette, Orange and Aransas, with volunteer teams from Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Texas:
- Orange: July 9-13
- La Grange: July 16-20
- Rockport: July 16-20
- Sour Lake: July 23-27
- Rockport: August 6-10
“We’re grateful to be able to partner with the Rebuild Texas Fund to help children emotionally recover from the devastating impact of the hurricane,” said Kim Dettmer, Senior Director of Disaster Services and Camp Noah. “Our partnership with the Rebuild Texas Fund will equip children with resiliency skills that will help them process their experience now and be better prepared for the future.”
Children, like adults, need special support to recover after a natural disaster. They may have lost their home, their own personal treasures, a daily routine and friends who may have moved away. At Camp Noah, they share their disaster stories, grieve their losses, plan for their future, play with purpose, and learn lifelong resiliency skills. Children also learn how to support others facing the unexpected.
“2018 saw an unprecedented number of disaster impacting the U.S.,” Dettmer said. “Recovery will take years. We’re thankful that communities trust Camp Noah to walk beside them in their long term recovery process.”
Camp Noah is also planning to hold camps in California, Wisconsin, Florida, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Louisiana, and Puerto Rico this year.
