Responding to a Community Need
Due to rapid population growth in the Rochester, Olmsted County area, the community is faced with changing service needs. Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS) is committed to contributing our resources and experience from across our services to address these changes through a coordinated process to better understand the unique needs and service gaps in this community.
- In 2017, LSS opened a new financial counseling office in Rochester to help reduce the high financial stress in the community.
- In 2015, LSS began its partnership with Olmsted Medical Center to support older adults returning home from hospitalization with companionship services to help prevent readmission.
- Since 2012, LSS has served youth at risk of and experiencing homelessness through Living INndependently with Knowledge (LINK) programs, and in 2017 increased its capacity to serve youth who have experienced sex trafficking.
- Since 1991, LSS Foster Grandparents have partnered with organizations and schools in Rochester to serve children who are at-risk.

A Growing Population
Olmsted County’s population has grown by 22% since 2000 — nearly twice the statewide rate.1
Behavioral Health
There has been a 22% increase in adolescent depression since 2012.2
Financial Stress
29% of residents report financial stress. Almost half of renters and 21% of homeowners are paying more than a third of their income on housing.3
People with Disabilities
Housing for children and adults with disabilities was identified to be the highest level of need in Olmsted County.4
Service Needs for Older Adults
Since 2000, the older adult population has grown by 68% (compared to 35% for the state),5 10% of whom live alone.6
Veterans
9,135 veterans live in Olmsted County.7
Youth Homelessness
On any given night there are 60–100 youth experiencing homelessness.8
