Supporting Adults with Autism Through In-Home Caregiving and Services
For adults with autism, daily life presents unique opportunities for growth, connection and self-expression. Each individual has their own strengths and opportunities, and tailored support is key to helping them thrive.
As Financial Management Service (FMS) provider in Minnesota for Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS), PICS (Partners in Community Supports) is dedicated to offering support and caregiving solutions that empower adults with autism to live independently and fully participate in their communities.
Home and Community-Based Services enable individuals with disabilities who have been assessed and meet eligibility requirements to remain in their homes and communities.
Home Care Services Options
At PICS, our services are designed to support individuals and their families at every step. We offer:
- Individualized Home Supports (IHS) without Training: This is a 245D basic licensed service where PICS is the employer. Individuals utilizing IHS services receive essential assistance with daily living activities, such as personal care, meal preparation, medication management, household tasks and community involvement. This service does not include skills training for individuals. It is assistance, prompts and reminders.
- Consumer Directed Community Supports (CDCS): CDCS is a flexible, self-directed model for individuals that are on a Medicaid waiver (BI, CAC, CADI, DD or EW) or the Alternative Care (AC) program.
- Community First Services and Supports (CFSS): CFSS is a self-directed care option replacing the Consumer Support Grant (CSG) and Personal Care Assistance (PCA). It offers flexibility in choosing supports and services that best fit individual needs. There are two models: the Agency model and the Budget model. A Consultation Services Provider will work with the individual to explain the programs and help them write a support plan.
These services empower individuals to choose how they receive care. They choose their schedule and can choose their caregiver, including family, friends or other people they trust.
Resources in Minnesota
Additionally, there are a variety of other resources in Minnesota that can support individuals with autism and their families. Disability Hub MN, the Autism Society of Minnesota and the Minnesota Autism Resource Portal are excellent starting points for accessing information and support. These resources offer valuable guidance on navigating public and private programs, applying for benefits and connecting with local providers.
Local county health and human service agencies are also key resources for individuals seeking case management and access to state-funded programs. They can help guide individuals through eligibility for services, provide MnCHOICES assessments and offer essential support tailored to individual needs.
Additional Resources
For legal and financial considerations, Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota provides resources on topics such as Supported Decision-Making, Guardianship & Conservatorship, Health Care Agent, Personal Representative of the Estate, Power of Attorney, and Pooled Trust. These services are crucial in helping families make informed decisions about long-term care and financial planning, ensuring that individuals with autism maintain autonomy while accessing the support they need.
At PICS, we understand that caregiving and support services are not one size fits all. We are committed to positively impacting the lives of the individuals and families we support and the choices that are right for them. Our compassionate and knowledgeable staff are ready to support you on your journey.
