New LSS office in Rochester offers free financial, housing counseling for area residents

Rochester residents are facing a financial predicament; the high cost of living and limited affordable housing means that many local individuals and families are combating high levels of financial stress and homeownership burden. Financial stress was named as one of the top five priorities for Olmsted County in its 2013 and 2016 community health needs assessment.

LSS Financial Counseling, a service of Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, has opened a new office in Rochester to help alleviate financial stresses with services that can resolve credit card debt, provide student loan repayment options, address housing financial challenges and teach money management skills to achieve personal financial wellness.

“We are thrilled to be in Rochester,” said Cate Rysavy, senior director of Financial Services for Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota. “We want to make a significant difference by aiming to serve 700 Rochester families and individuals in our first year.”

LSS Financial Counseling will be hosting an open house for the community at the new office on Wednesday, November 29 from 8:30 – 11:00 a.m. The office is located in the United Way of Olmsted County building at 903 West Center Street. During this event, all are welcome to stop by, learn about services available and meet the staff.

LSS Financial Counseling has offered financial counseling to southeastern Minnesota through phone and Skype-based counseling for over two decades. This new location is a direct response to years of requests for holistic, in-person financial counseling services in the community by individuals, social service organizations, and businesses. Essential to the successful launch of this new service in the community was the generous private philanthropy of the Rochester Area Foundation, The Schmidt Foundation, area churches, and local donors.

LSS Financial Counseling can help individuals and families assess their current financial situation and create a workable budget free of charge. Services also empower people to create debt management plans to resolve their credit card debt, pay off student loans, improve their credit, prepare to buy a home or prevent foreclosure. Certified financial counselors have expertise helping people affected by financial scams and identity theft as well.
